27 April 2008 - “We used to be happy, I had my garden, my animals, my home which, although poor, was beautiful; my garden was full of flowers and fruit trees. Each day, very early in the morning, I milked the cow and used the milk to make cheese which I then sold to neighbours or in the village. From one day to another… I lost everything.

We don’t know where to go, even if things were calm enough to return home; so many of our relatives have been killed, our houses and property has been looted; it would be difficult to return…

Action Against Hunger welcomes Alex Renton and Rebecca Seal’s article in this month’s Observer Food Monthly magazine highlighting the every day struggle that families living in refugee and displaced persons camps face to feed themselves and their children.

As a humanitarian agency specialised in tackling hunger and malnutrition, Action Against Hunger is working with people who have been forced from their homes  and who are facing unimaginable hardships as a result. “Access to sufficient food of adequate quality is a struggle for thousands of families worldwide sheltering in camps and seeking refuge from war, persecution or disaster,” says Jean Michel Grand, Action Against Hunger’s Executive Director. “Often these families have not only lost all their belongings and livelihoods but have also been severely traumatised and are struggling to survive. With the current food crisis, the situation is even worse and it’s therefore even more crucial to continue helping these families.”

Action Against Hunger works in close collaboration with UN and other humanitarian agencies to alleviate hunger in camps all over the world, helping families to feed their children.
