“Only a ceasefire will guarantee access to people affected by the conflict in Southern Lebanon”
- Action Against Hunger International Network calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon in order that humanitarian assistance can be provided to people affected by the crisis in Lebanon.
An estimated 700,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon due to the current conflict between Hezbollah and Israel. People are taking shelter in the homes of their extended families, schools and other buildings amidst inadequate hygiene conditions.
“Cases of scabies and other illnesses have already been recorded,” says Olivier Longué, Action Against Hunger- Spain’s Executive Director upon his return from Lebanon. These illnesses are the first sign of concern as other illnesses and epidemics might break out among the displaced persons. The prevention of and fight against infections is urgent and access to humanitarian assistance is more pressing than ever. “Only a ceasefire will allow us to reach people in the South of Lebanon; access is currently difficult due to the fighting,” says Longué.
Action Against Hunger is already working to prevent epidemics by distributing hygiene kits to 1,000 displaced families in the North of Beirut (Mount Lebanon) and in Saida. Action Against Hunger is also setting up new water systems to ensure water supply of adequate quality in areas where displaced persons are taking shelter.
During the first phase of the programme, Action Against Hunger’s team on the ground will monitor children and assist rural families with children, one out of four displaced persons.
Action Against Hunger aims to assist 50,000 people by implementing health and epidemics control programmes and 30,000 people by implementing child feeding programmes. “Even if there was an immediate ceasefire, between 50,000 to 100,000 people will have nowhere to return to since they have lost everything in the fighting,” comments Longué.
