Action Against Hunger is distributing food to 15,600 people affected by Typhoon Durian
The survivors of the typhoon have taken refuge in schools and public buildings. A lot of people have lost their homes. It is estimated that 1,000 people have died and disappeared and 830,000 people have been affected by the typhoon.
Action Against Hunger is distributing rice, sardines and noodles to more than 2,500 families as people are staring to rebuild their homes.
Water distribution systems have been extremely damaged, meaning that water supply for those affected by the Typhoon is very urgent. Water distribution via tanks will be necessary until the rehabilitation of the distribution network can begin. Most wells have been contaminated and many people are taking water from the rivers. Therefore, Action Against Hunger is distributing 40,000 litres of drinking water every day.
In addition, the organisation is distributing blankets, mattresses and basic cooking tools.
Action Against Hunger's Head of Base in the area, Frederic Roberts, highlights the need to work with regional and provincial institutions regarding disaster preparedness: "these kind of typhoons are recurrent in the area and work has to be carried out to prepare for similar disasters in the future." He also mentions the importance of environmental factors. "Deforestration has damaged the ground in this part of the country which means that wind and heavy rains can have devastating effects."
