Action Against Hunger continues to provide humanitarian assistance

29 December 2006- Action Against Hunger continues its humanitarian programmes in Wajid (south Bakool) and the capital Mogadishu despite the continuing insecurity in Somalia, and highlights the extreme vulnerability of the Somali population.

Extreme vulnerability and humanitarian needs

Beyond climatic hazards (drought, floods…), insecurity and the absence of public services, the already precarious humanitarian situation in Somalia is deteriorating. Efforts to provide mid-term support (durable rehabilitation of water points, agricultural diversification) seem inadequate in emergency situations where humanitarian assistance is vital to respond to immediate needs for treatment (health and nutrition), water, food and seeds needs. In July, a nutrition survey carried out by Action Against Hunger already revealed alarming results: 5.34% severe acute malnutrition and 33.5 global acute malnutrition.

Support to ongoing programmes in Wajid and Mogadishu

Action Against Hunger, present in Somalia since 1992 and in Mogadishu since 1995, continues to provide urgent assistance in collaboration with its Somali colleagues while adhering to its founding principles of independence, neutrality and impartiality.

Wajid

  • Nutrition: centres for the treatment of severe malnutrition (currently treating 100 children)
  • Water and sanitation: rehabilitation of water points
  • Food aid (distribution of protein biscuits) for children under 5 years old

Mogadishu

  • 2 Therapeutic Feeding Centres (in the north and south of the capital), each treating more than 100 severely malnourished children
  • Medical consultation centre taking care of 3,000 to 4,000 people per month
  • 2 vaccination centres- 1,000 children per month
  • Maternal health centre

While this information was written, our programmes are continuing but security measures have been reinforced (limited movement, visibility of sites, reinforcement of protection etc.)
