4 August 2007 - Since the beginning of June, South Asia is enduring a devastating monsoon. Following torrential rains in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, rivers have burst their banks. Already, more than 20 million people have been driven from their homes in search of safe areas.
Urgent need for drinking water and food
In Bangladesh, 4.5 million people have been affected by the flooding and more rain is foreseen. Hundreds of thousands of villages have been flooded. Food stocks and harvests are under water. People lack shelter, drinking water and food. Access to those affected is difficult due to flooding on the main roads. In Nepal, 300,000 have been affected by the floods in the south of the country.
Action Against Hunger launches emergency intervention
Already present in Nepal, Action Against Hunger is implementing an emergency intervention for 14,000 affected families. A team of logisticians are on their way to Bangladesh to evaluate needs and define the nature of an intervention. A race against the clock has been mounted to reach the millions trapped by the floods. Already, the most vulnerable people does not have access to food and drinking water, which risks leading to a worsening food and hygiene situation in the coming days.
