What is the International Run Against Hunger?

Young people unite! The Run breaks down barriers to unite children worldwide
Last Spring, over 130,000 pupils from London to Los Angeles participated in sponsored fun runs, demonstrating the campaign's growing success. Children ran over 500,000 miles and raised over £1.4 million helping families to feed themselves and their children in some of the world's poorest countries such as Sudan, Bangladesh and Liberia.
Each spring these pupils, along with their teachers and parents organise their own Run Against Hunger on their school's playing field or local parks to raise money for Action Against Hunger.
Action Against Hunger is one of the leading organisations in the fight against hunger and malnutrition. We work with schools to educate pupils about the reality of world hunger and give children the opportunity to make a difference by contributing to our international programmes.
Having received educational presentations, pupils have a clear understanding of why they are running and how they can help those around the world who do not have enough to eat.
It's easy to get involved!

Why taking part in the International Run Against Hunger?
Eductional Pressentation - Learning about world hunger
Action Against Hunger provides a School Kit as a starting point for a range of eductional activities. These can be tailored across the National Curriculum to a range of subjects including citizenship, modern languages and geography.
Action Against Hunger helps schools raise awareness about world hunger by offering interactive presentations. This gives pupils an insight into hunger related problems faced by vulnerable communities we assist around the world and harnesses the pupil's enthusiasm for the Run event.
Our speakers give pupils the opportunity to explore questions surrounding hunger and malnutrition including:
- What is hunger and malnutrtion?
- Why are people hungry?
- What can we do to help?
Those presentations can include DVD about our work, interactive games and question & answer sessions engaging pupils and capturing their imagination. For pupils and teachers alike, it is a unique opportunity to learn more about the causes of hunger and malnutrition and the different ways to combat these. For our speakers, it's immensely satisfying to share their experience and to motivate young people to join their positive action against hunger.

FAQs about the International Run Against Hunger
Why run?
The main aim is to take part in a fun and healthy activity that raises awareness and vital funds for Action Against Hunger's worldwide programmes.
How far do we run?
It’s up to you! The run can be as long or as short as you want. Some schools run laps of their playing field, while others measure their run in kilometers or miles. This means that pupils of all ages can take part in the runs and that there are no minimum or maximum distances – only personal goals and restricted times.
Who can take part?
The Run is open to everyone - whatever their age: students, teachers, parents… Until now, most participants have got involved through schools - but we are also keen for colleges, universities, health clubs, companies and other organisations to take part.
When does the Run take place?
The event usually takes place in the spring, but it can take place at any time during the year. The international date this year is Friday 16th May.
Where is it held?
If you don't have access to sports grounds or playing fields, Action Against Hunger can help to get permission from the local authorities to hold the Run in your local park.
Who sponsors us? How much do we get sponsored?
Each participant is sponsored a small amount for each lap/kilometre that he/she runs, by family and friends who decide the small amount of money they wish to pledge. All sponsorship contributions make a difference. The funds raised by the event provide a significant financial contribution indispensable for our action on the ground.
How much money can be raised in total?
This year 130,000 school children from the UK, France, Spain, Poland, Australia… took part in the Run Against Hunger - together they raised an incredible £1.4 million.
Where does the money go?
All money raised goes to Action Against Hunger UK's general funds. Private funding is essential to our work as it allows us to respond quickly in emergency situations.
A little really does go a long way
- £1 can help a farmer produce enough rice to feed his family for 4 days
- £27 can provide the survival kit needed to save the life of a severely malnourished child
- £350 can buy enough manual surface pumps to improve access to water for 10 communities
What happens once our school has decided to take part?
Action Against Hunger will send you a free information pack including a DVD about our work and activities on water and nutrition. For a printed International Run Against Hunger Information pack – click here. You can also contact Faye or Pauline on 0208 293 6190 or send an e-mail with your details.
1- Liaising with the Action Against Hunger team, choose a date for your school's Run. Pupils can therefore prepare for the special day and start training for the Run with their PE teacher.
2 - Pupils ask friends and family for sponsorship. An Action Against Hunger school kit is sent to your school so you can start raising awareness bout world hunger in participating key Stages. Also should you wish to organise an Assembly Presentation with an Action Against Hunger speaker - contact us and set a convenient date before the Run. Pupils will receive their fundraising kit along with information for their sponsors.
3 - Run day! Using your school's playing field or local park, set your Run circuit which can be measured in laps, kms or miles supervised by teachers and parents.
4 - Pupils collect sponsorship money and receive their Run certificate.

Students
Lucile (15), Lucile a french student went to Mongolia to meet Action Against Hunger's field workers. She explains the importance of the Run Against Hunger:
"I keep the Run close to my heart as it helps improve the lives of hungry children all over the world. I remember them each lap I run. I want to do my best to collect a maximum of funds and help improve their lives."
Jocelin (12), a pupil at Collège Jean Charcot in Saint Malo, France, is passionate about world hunger.
His life changed completely on his way back from his holidays in Guadalupe in July 2001. He got chatting to the person sitting next to him on the plane, Matthew - who hadn't been on holiday but on a mission for Action Against Hunger.
It was then that Jocelin found out that some people don't have enough to eat and decided that he would do everything he could to help people who, like Matthew, are involved in the fight against hunger.
In September, when he went to secondary school for the first time, he went right up to the headmaster and said: 'Do you know that there are people in the world who don't have anything to eat? We have to do something about it. How about organising a Run Against Hunger?'
Astonished by his determination, the headmaster agreed. The run organised by Action Against Hunger took place six months later.
'We raised £4,022,' says Jocelin. 'Not bad!! I know that we'll never manage to end war, hunger and poverty completely but that's no reason for doing nothing.'
Jocelin later had the chance to visit Action Against Hunger's programmes in Mali, along with another French participant, Aurelie (14). Aurelie was very active in organising the run at her school and was consequently chosen to act as a Run Against Hunger 'ambassador'.
'I visited a school and helped dig a well […]. I also went to see a feeding centre where Action Against Hunger cares for ill and malnourished children,' says Aurelie. 'I saw the concrete results of Action Against Hunger's work.'
Aurelie and Jocelin show how each pupil, at his or her own level, is a vital link in a continually growing chain of solidarity.
Teachers
'I got involved in the International Run Against Hunger because I care a great deal about doing something for people in distress. I believe that it is important for children to be aware of the reality of life in other countries and know that they themselves are not helpless, but can take action and make a difference.
The Run Against Hunger establishes a meaningful connection within an international event, giving pupils something in common with the school children whose language they are learning.'
Margaret Clifford, French teacher, Henrietta Barnett School, London.
'The children were highly motivated, following a special presentation by Jerome, an Action Against Hunger fieldworker, who helped them understand what is hunger and malnutrition. After that they were really keen to train to be able to run as far as they could on the day and raise as much money as possible to help other children.'
Mr. Mulot, Former Headmaster, Charles de Gaulle-Wix School, London.
'I think what's important is to show pupils that it's possible to take action even on a small scale. Through the International Run Against Hunger, and especially the awareness-raising sessions, the children come into contact with the reality of the world. They learn about the problems faced by Southern countries.
The Run gives them the chance to take action against fatalism.'
Chantal Gerbaud, Headmistress, Collège Jean Bullant, Ecouen, France.
'I thought it was important for the kids to work on the notion of solidarity as a part of our citizenship classes.
The International Run Against Hunger is a privileged moment to expand their world view, to become aware of other people's suffering and to take action to improve their lives.'
Serge Cauchy, teacher, Collège Denecourt, Bois Le Roi, France.
