HUMANITARIAN CONTEXT IN IVORY COAST

  • A large part of the population has fled the fighters and is displaced in the interior of the country and neighbouring countries
  • In February 2003, the civil war led to the displacement of almost 600,000 people (UNI-Africa report)
  • Half of the country was under the control of different rebel groups
  • Ivory Coast is one of the 23 countries undergoing a food emergency, in particular the rebel-controlled western and northern zones (UN, December 2003)
  • The consequences of the political crisis which the country is undergoing include difficulties with payment systems, a massive reduction in income, as well as a decrease in commercial transactions.
  • In recent years the country has suffered from the fall in the price of cocoa, its main export commodity along with coffee and petrol.
